Public Relations: what is it and is it a marketing tool?

What is PR?

When asked what I’m doing and I say that I’m studying public relations, more often than not, I can see people’s minds go immediately to spin doctoring. Most respond with a polite “Oh!” and “That must be very interesting.” Those who speak their mind, chuckle and inquire what kinds of tricks I’m learning to ‘spin the truth.’

Public relations isn’t about spinning the truth, hiding facts or lying. Whatever strategies may have been employed in the past, that kind of thing is frowned upon by any PR practitioner worth his or her salt.

Public relations is about building and enhancing relationships between an organizations and its publics. This is done 1) through two way communications (which is different from Marketing) to reach an understanding 2) to further the business goals of an organization. Continue reading
